In “Liderança 4 Task” (Leadership for Task), Nicolai digs into the topic in an original way, not strictly taking leadership as a personality trait, but rather as a strategic behavior. Nicolai manages to shed a realistic, complex and more mature light on this topic.
At the webinar onset, the speaker reminds us of the truly specific needs present in each level of an organization, in other words, each area within the organization calls for a specific professional development. "There's a huge difference between a professional recently entering the company and another one who has already gained lots of experience and ground in specific tasks."
In that sense, when developing their careers, professionals tend to go through different stages. In the first one, called by Nicolai as "Management of oneself", the professional has just become part of an organization and his worries are limited to rightly achieve what the leader asks for, perform a good teamwork and comply with the timetable.
Subsequently, the professional reaches other levels within the organization, which come to define their level of maturity and self-awareness. "These kinds of stages are traumatic for they demand specific skills and knowledge, a perception of identity and emotional maturity."
In this sense, the idea that leadership is a personality trait only possessed by certain people is totally dismissed for being not only wrong, but also counterproductive, since the same type and quality of leadership cannot be exercised in each and all situations. To show why each task demands for a different kind of leadership, Nicolai puts forward the following thoughts:
Finally, Nicolai minutely examines the topic setting out the problem of prejudices that may exist in the hierarchy-knowledge relation. "Classification by individual is the current trend in companies."
"The followers cannot be assigned tasks based on the classification of senior ranks. A good employee, great sales person, may not be able to coordinate the analysis of a sales report. If the task is new to her, she goes back to the low leadership level."
"It is necessary to diagnose individuals by the situation, stablish agreements and pacts with those being led to apply the correct type. The situational leader needs to know how to give a diagnosis of the situation. Depending on the situation, the approach will be different and the leadership situation will be another one."
